The Health Benefits of Herbs

The health benefits of herbs go far and wide. Many of the benefits can be found in herbs you are already using in your kitchen or may even grow in your yard.

Today on the Podcast I speak with Holistic Practitioner and Herbalist Tina, to discuss the health benefits of herbs.  She started her journey after dealing with health problems of her own with H pylori. Dr’s told her that there was nothing more, they could do for her.  So, she decided to learn how she could heal herself through nutrition and herbs and now is hoping to help other midlife moms as well.

She came from the medical field as a Nurse and has since moved on to Massage Therapy, Herbalism, and is now a Certified Holistic Health Practitioner. She is here to share some of her favorite herbs to use in midlife and their benefits.

Herbs and their health benefits:

Basil:

helps with digestion and relieves a lot of gas and bloating. It is perfect to use if you deal with colitis (inflammation in the colon) and can be enjoyed naturally or steeping in a tea. All types of basil are high in Vitamin A & C and can help with anxiety. It has a calming affect due to its sedative affect.  If you deal with anxiety or sleep deprivation, make sure to add more basil into your diet through pesto’s and Italian dishes as it also has a sedative affect.

Cayenne Pepper:

has a component called capsaicin which blocks pain signals from the nerve endings and is good for pain relief. You can create a salve with shea butter, cayenne pepper, beeswax, and St John’s wort to massage into any painful areas.  This salve is great for shingles or neuropathy and psoriasis but can also be used for colds and congestion. Just make some tea and put a dash of cayenne pepper, lemon, and honey to help relieve the congestion.

Ginger:

is an Anti-nausea for pregnancy, car sickness, and is great for gas and bloating.  If you have intestinal parasites make sure to add ginger to your soups to help aid in detoxification. Just make sure not to add to much, as it can also cause gas and bloating. It also helps to increase digestion, circulation, and sweating.  You can add it into your bath to help with detoxification.  Just make sure to check with a health care provider if you are on blood thinners as it also naturally works as a blood thinner.

Garlic:

anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral which works on every system in the body.  Add more garlic to everything!

For the most benefits, make sure to use a lot of herbs within your cooking, buy organic, grow your own and get creative with them.  Overlapping herbs will just bring more benefits to your overall health.
